Selvaggio Blu

Selvaggio Blu is a 5 day trek in Sardinia. I did this in June, 2025 with Climbing Sardina. I chose a guided trip because the route is not well defined and more importantly, I needed logistics. The trek is dry, i.e., there are no water sources. I would pack out between 3 and 4 liters of water everyday. Without logistics, carrying enough water would be impossible. Each night, a 4WD vehicle would meet us at a campsite and provide the all important water, food and tents, sleeping bags, spare clothes, toiletries, etc.

I flew into Cagliari and spent the night in an airbnb. I then took a bus from Cagliari to Santa Maria Navarrese and got a hotel. That first night, I met my guide and treking partners, Anja and Dorrit. We had a small group, which made bonding easy. We had dinner at a local pizza place, which was delicious, and talked. The next morning, we started Selvaggio Blu from just above Santa Maria.

Goats are common in this area. Shepherds having been here for over a thousand years.
Dorrit and Corrado, our guide. Dorrit is from Stuttgart and lives in Zurich working as a plastic surgeon.
Anja and I on the trail. Anja is a teacher of English and Italian in Stuttgart
First night – almost a full moon
First night’s dinner at a shepherd’s cabin. There was another group we shared campsites and dinner with each night.

A tradition hut made from juniper bows. The other group slept in here on the first night. I cowboy camped since the mosquitoes were not about.
Climbing up from one of our lunch spots. Swimming at lunch was a nice respite from the heat. In most cases we were the only ones at the beach since boats were prevented from landing.

Not all lunch stops were deserted beaches, but they all were beautiful
Another lunch spot. The only downside was that one has to climb back up after lunch. All of us got soaked with sweat as we climbed up.
Dorrit on a rappel. Too bad we were not rappelling to the sea.
Tree hugger!
We got a boat ride back to Santa Maria Navarrese after finishing the trek
Best gelato in the world is in Santa Maria Navarrese!

I had a great time. The highlights were the area, my trekking partners and guide, the sea. The low-lights were the heat and occasional mosquitoes. I love Sardinia and would love to go back but outside the high tourism months. Cagliari can sometimes be pack with tourists all trying to get the best selfie.
