North Tenmile Trail – Frisco

North Tenmile TH

I did a snowshoe hike on Christmas outside of Frisco called the North Tenmile trail, which parallels the North Tenmile Creek. The path was beautiful, with plenty of snow and mostly cloudy skies. The temperature was in the mid-20s. I occasionally heard the creek through the trees. My hike was very peaceful and would be a great trail run.

Tenmile Creek is under the snow.
Empty trail.
Less traveled empty trail.

The trail was mostly empty after the first mile. I started with my trail runners, put on micro-spikes after a mile, and then swapped micro-spikes for snowshoes after a few miles when I started post-holing. As is usual, any crowd begins to dissipate after one or two miles when there is a climb. In the winter, the packed trail becomes less congested and even disappears because of the lack of traffic.

Put on snowshoes for this.

I met three women and their lone dog on the trail. Their dog was amiable. He stood on one of my snowshoes and leaned against me, and I lost my balance and went over. I laughed, and they joined me after they profusely apologized. I love dogs with character.

Eagles Nest Wilderness.

I got into the Eagles Nest Wilderness and hiked on. Unfortunately, I needed to turn back and did not get to the end of the trail because I had dinner plans. I got about 4 miles before I had to turn around, so I did about an 8-mile out-and-back hike.

I would do it again in the winter. I imagine the trail gets crowded in the summer because it is so close to Frisco, about 1.5 miles from the town center. I thank the Douglass family for hosting me in Frisco at their place.
