Hall Ranch

Fig: Talking to the deer on Feb 24, a cold sunny day.
Fig: A rabbit on Hall braving the cold (10-F) and taking advantage of the sun.
Fig: Pan view at the top of Hall. I kept going for 50-meters, but the post-holing was hard.

Hall Ranch is outside of Lyons, CO, and is a 9.08 mi loop with 1,620 ft of ascent the way I usually do. I’ll go either CW or CCW. Hall Ranch is popular with mountain bikers and trail runners. Equestrians also use the trail. Some parts of Hall are off-limits to mountain bikers (Night Hawk Trail), and for some reason, e-bikes are not allowed on any of the trails. Hall will close due to muddy conditions. Check if the path is open at https://www.bouldercounty.org/open-space/parks-and-trails/hall-ranch/. I’ve seen more wildlife (deer, elk, rabbits, fox, and bear) on these trails than anywhere in Boulder County except for Steve and Debbie’s house (add wild turkeys, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes). At Hall, I found that if I talk to the wildlife (except for bears), they are calm and stare at me. Either my stink or singing abilities drive the bears away.

Fig: Plan view of Hall Ranch route.
Profile of Hall Ranch going CCW. The first climb is brutal.
